Description

The main objective is to support the Government of Guatemala in the implementation of the Food Security National Policy Document (PESAN in Spanish) by contributing to poverty alleviation, reducing food insecurity and chronic malnutrition.

More specifically, the project has some specific objectives that have to be fulfilled before its completion such as:

  • Promotion of food availability by increasing the production of basic grains to contribute to the country’s self-sufficiency in food.
  • Provide support to the population in the access to the basic food basket
  • Promotion of education, information and communication in food and nutrition, and exclusive breastfeeding; as well as contributing to the reduction of chronic malnutrition.
  • Improvement of coverage and quality of health, water and sewerage services and hygiene in families and communities, in order to reduce chronic malnutrition.
  • Institutional Strengthening of the Food Security national System (Sistema Nacional de Seguridad Alimentaria y Nutiricional - SINASAN) and Civil Society in order to decrease food insecurity and malnutrition.

Activity

Eptisa will provide Technical Assistance services in order to support the institutional strengthening of the National Council for Food Security (Consejo Nacional de Seguridad Alimentaria - CONASAN) and at the same time as strengthening of SESAN’s planning, coordination, integration and monitoring capacities for food and nutritional security interventions as well as the capacities of the institutions and of Government officials.

As well will intend to improve the monitoring of food security indicators for the prioritization of public expenditure; to introduce a goal and objectives methodology and its monitoring and evaluation system for performance indicators; and implementing and monitoring of the communication and visibility plan of the Budget Support Programme and the Media in food security issues.
